‘A work of art’ is a reference we often use for something traditionally creative. You might think of art as a painting or music or even a wonderful book you’ve always loved. But what if artistic virtue is more profound and personal? As someone who has spent my life creating not artwork, but a beautiful and meaningful life, I’ve been long devoted to the idea that creativity is actually much broader and deeper than something painted on a canvas.
I had never thought of myself as a creative growing up, and yet, at 22 years old, I was very aware that I needed to explore a deeper calling. At that time, it was in India, where I would have an auspicious meeting with a healer who inspired me to become an acupuncturist. Had I listened to what my family, peers, and society had to say I would have never decided to pursue Traditional Chinese Medicine in the 90's. Instead I listened my truth, took a brave risk, and charted my own path. Today I carry with me the ability to trust myself by following my instincts and intuition. As my career and life continue to evolve, living each day by my own design can mean a new way of seeing my gifts including my desire to write and share with the incredible community of women I work with.
Creating and cultivating easily parallels many aspects of fertility, but tapping into your own creative center independent of your fertility is life changing. As we let go of things that were no longer serving us last month, this month I want to us all to embrace cultivating something beautiful.
How do we begin to live by our own design?
Designing your life as art requires that you let go of what people expect and instead begin a quest to find your own deep truth. It means to create a path rather than to follow one. It is also an invitation to experiment with what you love or want, because you can’t realize and own your artistry until you embrace it. When we begin to look at life as something to design, it is that kind of permission that allows us to take steps forward, however large or small, or sometimes, not at all. Simply feeling your own being, created as a part of nature and completely unique, is all you need to shift your perspective and begin to see the art of your existence.
If you could create your life as art, how would it look?
Asking yourself this question is important because it allows you to imagine and to begin to see your life differently. How you start to live by your own design requires you setting your own terms and trusting that you already have the answers. This opportunity starts with the revelation. that you are already a beautiful creation of a much bigger interconnected universe, and that in itself, is enough.
It’s never a straight path
Authentically creating your life is a journey. Many aspects of ourselves have been buried under layers of living by expectations and circumstance. When we begin to tune into ourselves then we start to see where we are not living in alignment with our truth. At first this will cause chaos, a fundamental component of real change. You can start wherever you are. It might be energetically uplifting for you to begin a meditation practice, create a vision board, or plan a big trip to India.
When we are creating our lives as a work of art, what we are really doing is unearthing and bringing into bloom our soulful expression to the world. A work of art, the product of a beautiful creative process, is the result of a dedication by the artist to explore what is inside of her, and what is meant to be shared.
When I say create your life as a work of art, my message is simple: honor who you are and how you want to design each day. So when you look at the your life’s canvas spread out before you it is nothing short of an extraordinary, vibrant, work of art that only you could have created.
